Esta es la última entrada del año en mi blog con mi último paseo del año y  lo hice a la bonita ciudad de  Guadalajara. ¡Huuuy!  tenía ya algún tiempo de no visitar.  Ya algunos años. Estuve por allí en noviembre pasado, justo al final de los juegos Panamericanos.

En esta ocasión me sorprendió pues encontré como que la ciudad y su gente  ahora sí han asumido la vocación de Guadalajara como gran ciudad del mundo. La encontré como siempre bonita, pero más urbana, cosmopolita y sin por eso perder su aire de cuna de tradiciones de México (léase los mariachis, tequila, etc.).

Los Juegos Panamericanos, comentan propios y extraños,  fueron organizados y llevados a cabo de manera impecable. Los Tapatíos (los de Guadalajara) y los Jalisquillos en general (los del Estado de Jalisco, pero no les gusta el apodo, jeje) se sacaron un 10. Sólo la inauguración dejó a todos con la boca abierta. Wow.

En las fechas que yo llegué ya no me tocó ver ningún evento, pero pude ver de lejos los fuegos artificiales de la clausura, wow de nuevo.

Como visité a varios amigos muy queridos anduve de arriba a abajo por la ciudad (¡bendito GPS!) y ahí te das cuenta de su tamaño.

En esta ocasión mis amigos Efrén y Alex me llevaron a un sitio arqueológico con un nombre chistoso: Guachimontones. Muy cerca de la ciudad. Son varias pirámides circulares y un juego de pelota en un paraje alto y que tiene una vista muy bonita. Un lugar bien interesante.

También visitamos el pueblo de Tequila. Faltaba más. El corazón de donde se produce la bebida distintiva de México. Muy bonito. Por eso han filmado allí películas y telenovelas.

De regreso en Guadalajara mi amigo Ramón nos llevó a el centro comercial más nuevo de la ciudad, Plaza Andares , en Puerta de Hierro, una zona muy exclusiva tipo Santa Fe del DF. Me gustó mucho el lugar.

Algo nuevo en la ciudad es el Puente Atirantado, y junto a él el nuevo Hotel Riu, que es el edificio más alto de Guadalajara. Espectacular.

Y por supuesto no podía faltar el clásico Tlaquepaque, con sus tiendas maravillosas de artesanías.

Total que me quedó muy buen sabor de boca de esta visita. No dejaré que pase tanto tiempo para hacer la próxima.

This is the last post of the year and it’s about my last trip of the year to Guadalajara city. The second largest city in the country. It’s been some time since my last visit to Guadalajara. A few years actually. I was there a few weeks ago, just when Pan American Games that took place there where ending. On this occasion I was surprised. I found that the city and its inhabitants now  have assumed the Guadalajara’s vocation as a word class city.

I found it pretty as ever, but more urban and cosmopolitan but at the same time without losing its place as the crib for many of Mexico’s traditions. The Pan American Games were organized and conducted flawlessly. The Tapatios (people from Guadalajara) and Jalisquillos in general (the State of Jalisco people, but do not like the nickname, hehe) earned a A+.  The opening ceremony left everyone with mouths open. Wow.

I could see from afar the closing ceremony fireworks, wow again. I visited some dear friends up and down the city (blessed GPS!) and then I realized the size of it. On this occasion, my friends Ephrem and Alex took us to an archeological site with a funny name: Guachimontones. Very close to Guadalajara city. There are several circular pyramids and a ceremonial ball game court on a high spot and it has a beautiful view. A very interesting place.

We also visited the town of Tequila.  The very spot where the most distinctive drink of Mexico is produced. Very nice town. That’s why movies have been filmed there and soap operas too.  Back in Guadalajara, my friend Ramon took us to the newest mall in the city: Plaza Andares in Puerta de Hierro neighborhood. A very exclusive area  just like  Santa in Mexico City. I really liked the place.

Something new in town is the suspension bridge, and next to it the new Hotel Riu, which now  is the tallest building in Guadalajara. Spectacular. And of course I could not miss the classic Tlaquepaque with its wonderful shops of handicrafts.

We spent a great time and I wont’t let pass so long before visiting again the beautiful Guadalajara.

Puerto de Santa Cruz, Huatulco

En el hermoso estado de Oaxaca, sobre las costa del pacífico mexicano se encuentran las bahías de Huatulco. Son 9 maravillosas bahías y 36 playas.

En un principio se había planeado este lugar para que fuera un desarrollo al estilo de Cancún. Pero grupos ambientalistas intervinieron para que no se llenara aquello de concreto y hoteles y así 6 de las 9 bahías quedaron protegidas en lo que es un Parque Nacional. No puede haber desarrollos en esas bahías por lo que continúan prístinas y hermosas. A algunas puedes llegar por tierra y a otras solo puedes llegar en barco.

Nuestro hotel estaba en una de las otras tres bahías que si albergan desarrollos turísticos: Tangolunda. Estuve en el hotel Dreams de Huatulco. En un paquete de Interjet que no estuvo nada mal: avión, hotel todo incluído y transportación.

Es mi primera visita a Huatulco y me gustó mucho. Es un lugar tranquilo y hermoso. Todo verde y selvático (en esta época lluviosa del año).  La infraestructura es muy buena y aparte de los grandes hoetles lujosos en Tangolunda, hay muchos hoteles pequeños y bonitos por ahí. Todo muy limpio y tranquilo.

Hay dos pequeños pueblos: La Crucecita, que es el más grande y habitan como 8 mil personas y es como pintorecso. Hay unos pequeños  trollies que te dan pasesos por los alrededores.

Y el otro es el Puerto de la Santa Cruz,  donde está la marina y donde llegan los grandes cruceros. Hay un mirador camino al puerto donde se tiene una vista WOW!.

En el hotel contratamos un tour que dura todo un día donde te llevan en barco a visitar las bahías.  Bueno, la mayoría las ves de lejos y solo bajas en dos: la de San Agustín que es la más lejana y tiene una playa hermosa y solitaria y puedes hacer snorqueling, y en otra bahía donde hay lugares para comer (no muy buenos por cierto).

Cerca están las famosas playas de Mazunte y Zipolite pero ya no hubo tiempo de realizar una visita.

En suma, es un lugar hermoso y pienso regresar. ¡Visiten!

In the beautiful state of Oaxaca on the Pacific coast of Mexico you find the Huatulco bays. They are 9 wonderful bays and 36 beaches.

Huatulco was originally planned to be a  Cancun-style development, but environmental groups stepped in to avoid big corporations to fill this with  concrete and hotels, and 6 of the 9 bays were protected when a National Park was created. There can be no touristic developments in those bays so they’re still pristine and beautiful. Some of them can be reached by land and others can only reach by the sea.

Our hotel was located in one of the three bays that house  tourism development: Tangolunda. I stayed at the Huatulco Dreams Hotel. got an Interjet plan that was not bad at all: airfare, all-inclusive hotel and transportation.

It’s my first visit to Huatulco bays and I loved it. It is quiet and beautiful. All green and wild (this is the  rainy season). The infrastructure is very good and besides the large luxury hotels in Tangolunda, there are many small and nice hotels  out there. Everything is very clean and quiet.

There are two small towns: La Crucecita, which is the largest and has about as 8 000 inhabitats. It’s very picturesque. There are small trollies where you get tours around the town.

The other town  is the Port of Santa Cruz, there is a seamanship where large cruise ships arrive. On the way to the port, there is a viewpoint with a beautiful sight.

We hired a tour at the hotel where you take a boat to visit the bays. It takes all day long.  You see  most of the bays from afar and only visit  two of them: St. Augustine Bay which is the most distant and has a beautiful and lonely beach and you can do snorkeling, and there is another bay where there are places to eat (not very good indeed ).

Nearby are the famous beaches of Zipolite and Mazunte but there was no time for a visit.

In short, is a beautiful place and I will  return for sure.Visit Huaulco!

Hacienda de Cortés

Hace unas semanas me pasé un fin de semana en Cuernavaca. El lugar: Hotel Hacienda de Cortés.

Esta era parte del Marquesado del Valle de Oaxaca, otorgado a Hernán Cortés, el conquistador de México por el Rey de España. Durante mucho tiempo fue un ingenio azucarero. Después cayó en el abandono y con el pasar del tiempo y varios dueños, terminó siendo un hotel y Spa.

Tiene unos jardines muy bonitos y un muy buen restaurante. Para escaparse un fin de semana está perfecto. No necesitas salir, ahí tienes de todo.

El Spa vale la pena, quedas bieeen relajadito.

Está dentro de la ciudad de Cuernavaca, así que se llega fácil.

A few weeks ago I spent a weekend in Cuernavaca. The place: Hacienda de Cortes Hotel.

This was part of the  del Valle de Oaxaca Marquis land, given to Hernán Cortés, the conqueror of Mexico by the king of Spain . For a long time it was a sugar mill. Then it fell into disrepair  and with the passage of time and several owners, eventually  became a hotel and spa.

It has some beautiful gardens and a very good restaurant. For a weekend escapade it’s perfect. No need to go outside, here you have everything.

The Spa is worth the visit.

It’s located inside Cuernavaca city, so it’s easy to get there.

Chicago Skyline

Chicago es una de las ciudades de Estados Unidos que tenía muchas ganas de conocer. ¿Quién no ha oído hablar de Chicago? Sus rascacielos, el gran incendio, la Mafia, su gran lago.

Pues gracias a mi amigo Roberto tuve oportunidad de conocer esta hermosa ciudad.

He estado en varias grandes ciudades gringas y en algunas de ellas no eres nadie si no tienes auto. Es imposible moverte en ellas. No en Chicago. Me gustó mucho que no necesitas auto en absoluto para recorrerla y disfrutarla. Anduvimos de arriba a bajo en metro y autobús y fue muy fácil llegar a todos los sitios de interés. También es delicioso caminarla.

Aunque no estuve muchos días, con la ayuda de Roberto pude conocer lo más relevante de la ciudad. Museos como el Instituto de arte de Chicago y el Museo Field de Historia Natural. Allí vi el fósil de  ’Sue’ un tiranosaurio hembra. Wow!

Visitamos también el Acuario Shedd que es enorme y había una exposición especial de Medusas. Desde allí se tiene una vista fantástica de la ciudad. Si vas a Chicago tienes que tomar fotos desde este punto. De día y de noche.

Los parques de Chicago son especialmente hermosos y grandes. El primer día estuvimos en el Millenium Park. Allí se encuentra la famosa obra ‘El frijol’ del escultor británico Anish Kapoor. El nombre oficial es the Cloud Gate.  Está hecha de placas de acero pulido que reflejan la ciudad y es espectacular.

También me encantaron unas fuentes que son a la vez pantallas y muestran los rostros de gente y se mueven. En uno de esos gestos el rostro de una mujer abre la boca y de ahí brota un corro de agua. genial. El Lincoln Park es el más grande y se ubica a lo largo del lago Michigan.

Por supuesto me subí a los dos rascacielos más latos de Chicago: La torre Sears (que ahora se llama Torre Willis pero nadie le llama por ese nombre chafa) y la torre Hancock. Se tiene por supuesto una vista increíble desde allá arriba. Ese día había una bruma extraña que cubría esa parte de la ciudad y fue espectacular.

En fin, Chicago es una ciudad que me encantó y espero volver a visitarla.

Chicago is one of the U.S. cities that I really wanted to visit. Who has not heard of Chicago? its Skyscrapers, the great fire, the Mafia, its great lake.

Well, thanks to my friend Roberto I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful city.

I’ve been in several major gringo  cities and in some of them you’re nobody if you do not have car. It is impossible to move without a car. Not in Chicago. I really liked that you  do not need at all a car  to visit and enjoy. We walked up and down on subway and bus and it was very easy to reach all sites. Walk around  is also delicious.

Although I was not there for long,  with Roberto’s help I got to know the most important landmarks of the city. Museums like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum of Natural History. There I saw the fossil of ‘Sue’ , the Tyrannosaurus female. Wow!

We also visited the Shedd Aquarium which is huge and that day there was a special exhibition of jellyfish. From there you have a fantastic view of the city. If you’re going to Chicago you just have to take pictures from this point. Day and night.

The parks of Chicago are especially beautiful and great. The first day we were at the Millennium Park. There is the famous work: ‘The Bean’ by the British sculptor Anish Kapoor.The official name is the Cloud Gate. It is made of polished steel plates that reflect the city and it’s spectacular.

The Lincoln Park is the largest and is located along Lake Michigan.

Of course I visited the two highest skyscrapers in Chicago: the Sears Tower (now called Willis Tower but nobody calls it by that ugly  name) and the Hancock Tower. There is of course an amazing view from up there. That day there was a strange haze that covered that part of the city and it was spectacular.

In short, Chicago is a city I loved and I hope to visit again.

Teatro de la Paz

Pues tenía mucho tiempo con ganas de conocer San Luis Potosí.  Antigua ciudad colonial y minera que se fundó allá por 1592. Su centro es muy bonito, lleno de edificios elegantes y por supuesto, iglesias. Como era semana santa, me tocó ver su famosa peregrinación del silencio. Muy impresionante. ¡Dura horas! Cofradía tras cofradía. Hombres, mujeres y niños.

Me llamó la atención su Centro de las Artes, que antes era una penitenciaria.  Me encantó el Teatro de la Paz, tan clásico. También me gustó mucho el parque Tangamanga. Es muy grande, verde y bonito. Rentamos unas bicis y anduvimos muy a gusto recorriendo el parque. Espero volver pronto para conocer otras zonas del estado.

I had long wanted to visit San Luis Potosí state. The capital of the same name, former colonial mining town that was founded back in 1592. Its downtown is very beautiful, full of elegant buildings and of  course, many churches. As it was Easter, I happened to see the famous pilgrimage of silence. Very impressive. I was also impressed  by the  Center for the Arts, formerly a prison. I loved the Theater of the Peace, so classic. I also liked the park Tangamanga. It’s very large, green and beautiful. We rented bikes and  rode through the park. I hope to return soon for other parts of the state.

Museo Soumaya / Soumaya Museum

Hace poco se inauguró el fabuloso museo Soumaya en la Ciudad de México. Creo que siempre hay que celebrar el que nazca un museo. Y si es uno tan espectacular como este y con el acervo con el que cuenta, pues todavía más. Si Carlos Slim, el hombre más rico del mundo, se gastó uno milloncitos en regalar cultura a México, enhorabuena. El arquitecto del museo,  Fernando Romero, es su yerno. Muchos criticarán su elección de arquitecto, pero resulta que el hombre tiene una buena fama bien merecida. Hace meses encontré este artículo en un periódico argentino sobre su trayectoria (“El heredero mexicano de Rem Koolhaas“) y resulta que no es ningún improvisado.

A mi me gustó mucho. Por fuera y por dentro. He ido ya un par de veces. El  edificio es impresionante. Como algo orgánico pero recubierto de metal. Me llama la atención que desde fuera te da la sensación de ser más pequeño,  y estando dentro te asombra la amplitud, ayudada por el blanco por doquier y un aire minimalista. Al lado se está construyendo otro museo, de la fundación Jumex. Cuando el conjunto esté terminado será fantástico.

Pero como debe ser, visiten y formen su propia opinión. Hay obras de creadores que antes tenía uno que salir de México para conocerlos. La museografía es polémica también y la muestra ecléctica no le gusta a todo mundo. A mi me latió.

Ah, la entrada es gratis. “Para siempre”, dijo Slim.

Recently opened its doors the fabulous  Soumaya museum in Mexico City. I think that we should always celebrate the birth of a museum. And one as spectacular as this one and with the acquis it has, even more. If Carlos Slim, the world’s richest man spent a few million dollars to give a gift of culture to Mexico, congratulations. The museum’s architect, Fernando Romero, is his son-in-law. Many  criticize his choice of architect, but it turns out that the man has a well deserved reputation. I found this article last month in an Argentine newspaper about his career (“The Mexican heir Rem Koolhaas“) (sorry, it’s in spanish) and it turns out he is not an improvised man. I liked a lot this museum. From the outside and the  inside. I’ve visited  a couple of times. The building is impressive. It’s as something organic but coated in metal. I found curious that from the outside it gives you the feeling of being smaller, and from the inside its size shocks you. T the sensation is aided by the white color everywhere and a minimalist air. Next to it another museum is being constructed. The Jumex fundation museum.

When the whole complex is finished, it will be wonderful.But  as it should be, visit and form your own opinion. There are works by artists who once you had to go out of Mexico to see them. The museology is controversial and the eclectic content  also does not appeal to everyone. I really liked it.

En Marzo de cada año se lleva a cabo la Feria de la Pirotecnia en Tultepec.  Este año fuimos nuevamente para el día en que se lleva a cabo el concurso de Piromúsica. Fuegos artificiales sincronizados con música. Es padrísimo.  Hay otro día que se realiza el concurso de Castillos. Tultepec es vecino de Cuautitlán y tiene varias tradiciones bonitas, como en día de muertos, que ya les conté en este blog. No se lo pierdan y  dense una vuelta el  próximo año. Mariposas Monarca

Este invierno nuevamente visité  el santuario de las mariposas Monarca, en el Estado de México, donde migran cada año huyendo del frío de USA y Canadá. Aquí se refugian y se reproducen. Hay que subir un camino en medio del bosque que puedes hacer a caballo o a pie. Lo hice a caballo por supuesto, ja ja. Es increíble  ver miles y miles de mariposas posadas en los árboles y volando por todos lados. Mágico. Lo malo es que !JUSTO allí se me acabó la maldita pila de la cámara! Así que solo saqué poquitas fotos y un par de vídeos del santuario.

El resto del fin de semana la pasé en el hermoso pueblo de Valle de Bravo.  Pasear por sus calles, curiosear por sus muchas y muy bonitas tiendas y comer en cualquiera de sus muy buenos restaurantes es siempre un placer. En esta ocasión además tomé el paseo en bote alrededor del lago que me gustó mucho. El clima fue excelente y tuvimos un cielo azul siempre cruzado por parapentes y papalotes.  ¡Me encanta Valle!

This winter I visited the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary again. Located in the State of Mexico, it’s a place where the butterflies migrate every year to escape from the cold of USA and Canada. Here they take refuge and reproduce. Once you get there you have to climb a path in the woods and you can do it on horseback or on foot. I did it on horseback, of course, he he. It’s amazing to see thousands and thousands of butterflies perched on trees and flying everywhere. Magic. The bad thing was  is that just right there the damn camera battery ran out! So I just took a few pictures and a couple of videos.

The rest of the weekend was spent in the beautiful town of Valle de Bravo. Strolling through the streets, browsing through its many and very nice shops and eating in any of its great restaurants is always a pleasure. On this occasion I also took the boat ride around the lake and  I liked it a lot. The weather was excellent and we always had a blue sky crossed by handgliders and kites. I love Valle!

Ex Hacienda San Miguel Regla

En el estado de Hidalgo, en el área de los pueblos mineros, en el municipio de Huasca,  se encuentra la Ex-Hacienda de San Miguel Regla. Convertida ahora en un hotel, fue construida en el siglo XVIII por el Conde de Regla, el Carlos Slim de aquellos  tiempos. La hacienda es bonita y el pueblo de Huasca es uno de los denominados Pueblos Mágicos

Muy cerca de ahí visitamos la cascada de los Prismas Basálticos, que son unas columnas geométricas de basalto sobre las paredes de la barranca de San Miguel Regla. Hay cuatro caidas de agua muy bonitas.

A 40 minutos de ahí se encuentra otra impresionante barranca: de Peña del Aire. Tiene unos paisajes espectaculares y se respira una paz increíble. Solo escuchas el viento allá arriba.

Visitamos también un criadero de truchas y puedes pescar la que te vayas a comer.

Muy cerca también está Real del Monte. Este pueblo precioso que ya he visitado varias veces pero que cada vez me impacta. Por todas partes hay tiendas de pastes y ahora si me despaché unos de dulce que nunca encontraba.

In Hidalgo State, in the area of the mining towns in the municipality of Huasca, you find the Ex-Hacienda  San Miguel Regla. Now converted into a hotel, it was built in the eighteenth century by the Count of Regla, the Carlos Slim of those times. The place  is beautiful and the little town of Huasca is one of the so-called Magical Towns.

Not far from there we visited the basaltic prisms waterfall, which are a geometric basalt columns over the walls of San Miguel Regla Canyon. There are four very beautiful waterfalls.

40 minutes from there you find another impressive canyon: Peña del Aire. It has some spectacular scenery and is filled with an incredible sense of peace. You just listen to the wind up there.
We also visited a trout farm where  you can fish your own  to eat.

Nearby is also Real del Monte. This beautiful town that I have already visited several times but each time enchant  me. There are ‘Pastes’ shops everywhere (like a  little pie) and  I had some sweet.

Cúpula y elevador / Cupule and elevator

Hola, volví al re-inaugurado monumento a la Revolución para subir por el elevador panorámico y disfrutar la vista desde allá arriba y conocer esta parte del monumento cerrada por tantos años. Padrísimo.

Lo único malo es que fuimos muy tarde y ya no encontramos abierto el Museo de la Revolución.  Vayan, se los recomiendo.

I went back to the reinagurated Revolution Monument to get e ride in the new panoramic elevator and get the view from the top. Awesome!

Too bad we got late to find the Revolution Monument opened. Visit if you get the chance.

Monumento de la Revolución. 100 años

Por las festividades del Centenario de la Revolución reinaguraron el monumento de la Revolución y quedó estupendo. Ahora tiene un elevador transparente en el centro, reabrieron el mirador y ahora hay un andador peatonal desde Insurgentes hasta Reforma. Aquí las fotos del día de la reinaguración.

For the revolution centennial festivities the Monument of the Revolution was restored and re-opened and now it’s great. Now it has a transparent elevator in the center, reopened the veranda and there is now a pedestrian walkway from Insurgentes avenue to Reforma avenue.  Here some photos of the re-opening day.

Día de Muertos Oaxaca 2010

Este pasado Día de Muertos se conjuntaron dos cosas: mi festividad favorita y una de las ciudades que más me gustan. Así que el resultado solo podía ser que este ha sido el mejor día de muertos que he pasado.

Me lancé de a solapa el pasado puente a Oaxaca. Desde el día que salí de la Ciudad de México tuve suerte porque había un cielo claro y se tenía una vista espectacular de los volcanes en el camino.

En Oaxaca el Día de Muertos se vive intensamente porque es una tradición todavía muy vigente entre la gente y además el gobierno de la ciudad la promueve y apoya bastante. Había muchas actividdades, muchos eventos y en todos lados había ofrendas y altares a cual más bonito. Un concurso de calaveras gigantes y los espectaculares ‘tapetes’ de arena de colores con motivos del Día de Muertos, frente a la catedral. Toda la ciudad se vivía en un ambiente de fiesta.

En la noche del 31 fuia dos panteones: El de San Miguel, que es el cementerio de la ciudad y el de un pueblito cercano: Xoxocotepec. Ambos muy bonitos y tradicionales. El de San Miguel fue espectacular con sus 2400 nichos iluminados con veladoras. Pero el de Xoxo más entrañanble porque había más familias pasando la noche con sus muertos y las tumbas estaban adornadas más elaboradamente. Es algo difícil de entender para un extranjero, supongo. Que en un panteón se viva un ambiente de alegría. Je. Pero es eso, una ocasión festiva porque vas a estar cerca de los tuyos que se fueron.

La siguiente noche me tocó ver en la Plaza de la Danza, que es el atrio de una iglesia colonial muy bonita, representaciones de danzas folclóricas y en las gradas, que se desocuparon para ese momento, se pusieron miles de veladoras de colores. Wow.

Hasta en el regreso me tocó padre el paisaje e hice unas tomas muy bonitas de las montañas.

En fin, espero que los espíritus de nuestros muertos se la hayan pasado bomba porrque para mí, como dije al principio, ¡el mejor Día de Muertos!

This October I had two of my favorite things: my favorite holiday in the year and one of my favorite cities. So the result could only be that this has been the best day Day of the Dead I’ve had.

I traveled alone to Oaxaca City. From the day I left Mexico City I was lucky because there was a clear sky and there was a spectacular view of the volcanoes on the road.

In Oaxaca, the Day of the Dead is lived intensely because it is a tradition still very much alive among the people,  and also the city government promotes and supports these festivities. There were many activities, many events and you could see everywhere offerings and altars, all of them beautiful. There was a competition of giant skulls and the spectacular ‘mats’ of colored sand with the Day of the Dead motives. The whole city had  a party atmosphere.

On the night of the 31st  I visited two cemeteries: The San Miguel Cemetery, which is the municipal cemetery and another at a a village nearby: Xoxocotepec. Both are very beautiful and traditional. The San Miguel was spectacular with its 2400 candles lit niches. But  Xoxo cemetery was more moving because more families were spending the night with their dead and the graves were decorated more elaborately. It is somewhat difficult to understand for a foreigner, I guess. That in a cemetery  you live a joyful atmosphere. He he. But is this a festive occasion because you will be near your own who are gone.

The following night I got to see the Plaza de la Danza (Dance Square), which is the atrium of a beautiful colonial church, there were folk dance performances and in the stands you could see  thousands of colorful candles. Wow!

In my way returning to Mexico City  I enjoyed a pretty landscape and made some very nice shots of the mountains.

Anyway, I hope that the spirits of our dead had a very good time, because for me. as I said earlier, this was the best Day of the Dead ever!

Antiguo cine Hipódromo / Former movie theater "Hipódromo"

Pasando un día por Tacubaya, comentamos que nos parecía un barrio muy feo. Pero Gerardo, que pasó muy cerca de ahí su niñez, nos dijo que en realidad tenía zonas muy bonitas y que nos sorprendería. Así que le tomamos la palabra y nos decidimos a hacer un recorrido por la colonia Tacubaya y descubrirla.

Tacubaya, palabra náhuatl que significa “Lugar donde se toma agua”, era antiguamente una villa en las afueras de la ciudad  de México. Como muchos otros lugares en las cercanías, con el paso de los años y con el crecimiento desmesurado de la Ciudad de México, terminó convirtiéndose en un barrio más.

En este recorrido descubrimos señales de aquellos tiempos en que era una villa tranquila, callecitas, parques y construcciones antiguas . Fue muy disfrutable y comprobamos que uno nunca termina de conocer esta ciudad.

On an occasion the guys and I were  talking about  Tacubaya and we commented that it seemed a very bad neighborhood. But Gerardo, who spent a lot of time there in his childhood, he told us it was actually a very nice area and that it would surprise us. So  we decided to take a tour to the neighbourhood and discover Tacubaya

Tacubaya, a  Nahuatl word meaning “the place where water is taken,” was formerly a village on the outskirts of Mexico City. Like many other places nearby, over the years it was absorbed by the enormous growth of Mexico City, and it has become another neighborhood.

On this tour we found signs of those times when it was a quiet village: narrows streets, parks and old buildings. It was very enjoyable and we confirmed that one never gets to know all of this city.

Cabeza colosal Olmeca / Colossal Olmec Head

En esta última entrega del paseo a Veracruz en las pasadas fiestas patrias les muestro el maravilloso Museo de Antropología de Xalapa y nuestra llegada al puerto de Veracruz, donde nos tocó ver los destrozos del huracán Karl.

Yo había escuchado de este Museo pero superó todas mis expectativas. ¡Es hermoso! tanto en contenido riquísimo como en lo arquitectónico y museografía. Con el clima de Xalapa sus jardines son una delicia muy disfrutable también. El museo contiene piezas hermosas de las culturas Olmeca, Totonaca y Huasteca.

En la entrada del Museo en un muro hay inscritas una palabras que me emocionaron:

“Mexicano detente:

Esta es la raíz de tu historia: tu cuna y tu altar. Oirás la voz silenciosa de la cultura más antigua de México, tal vez la de la civilización madre de nuestro continente. Los olmecas convirtieron la lluvia en cosechas, el sol en calendario, la piedra en escultura, el algodón en telas, las peregrinaciones en comercio, los montículos en tronos, los jaguares en religión y los hombres en Dioses“.

Después salimos hacia el puerto de Veracruz. Un día antes el huracán había golpeado esa zona. Mientras nos acercábamos en carretera al puerto, comenzamos a ver cientos de árboles derrumbados, ramas arrancadas y la vegetación inclinada en dirección del viento como si una mano gigantesca la hubiera aplastado. Después caminos inundados y, a la orilla de los ríos, casas con el agua hasta las ventanas.

En la ciudad lo que se veía eran árboles caídos y ramas en todas las calles, muchísimos letreros y señalamientos en el piso. Pero fuera de eso no mucho más daño (después supimos que lo peor vino después cuando toda esa agua que llovió en las montañas desbordó los ríos y fue un desastre).  Esa tarde comimos en Mandinga, junto a la laguna. Un lugar muy típico. En la noche una vueltecita al centro y al día siguiente fuimos al Fuerte de San Juan de Ulúa. Un lugar muy histórico construido allá por 1535 por los españoles para proteger el puerto de los ataques de los piratas como Francis Drake.

Esta visita al estado de Veracruz me gustó mucho, con todo y huracán. Visiten y disfruten,porque además de esa manera ayudarán a la recuperación de la economía del puerto, tan golpeada por el huracán.

Fuerte de San Juan de Ulúa / San Juan de Ulua Fortress

In this last review about  my trip to Veracruz State, I’ll show you  the wonderful Xalapa Museum of Anthropology and our arrival at the port of Veracruz, where we got to see the devastation of Hurricane Karl.

I had heard of this museum but it exceeded all my expectations. It’s beautiful! both its rich content and architectural design. Also its museography. The climate of Xalapa makes the gardens a delight also very enjoyable. The museum contains beautiful pieces of the Olmec, Totonac and Huasteca cultures.

At the entrance on a wall you find  inscribed a few words that moved me:

“Mexican,  halt:

This is the root of your history:  your cradle and your altar. Hear the silent voice of the oldest culture of Mexico, perhaps the mother of civilization on our continent. The Olmecs transformed the rain into  crops, the sun into calendar, the stone into sculpture, the cotton into fabrics, the pilgrimages into trade, the mounds into thrones, the jaguars into religion and men in Gods”.

After that we left Xalapa and headed to the  port of Veracruz. A day before Hurricane Karl had beaten the area.As we approached the port down the road, we saw hundreds of trees blown down, torn branches and vegetation leaning into the wind as if a giant hand had crushed it. Later we saw flooded roads and, on the banks of rivers, houses with water up to the windows.

In the city  fallen trees and branches were seen in every street, many signs and posts on the floor. But other than that not much more damage (in the following days we learned that the worst came later when all that water that rained in the mountains got to the rivers and overflowed the and it was a disaster.)

That evening we ate at Mandinga, next to the lagoon. A very typical place. In the evening we gave a  little walk to downtown and the next day we went to Fort San Juan de Ulua. A very historic place built back in 1535 by the Spaniards to protect the port from attacks by pirates as Francis Drake.

I enjoyed a lot this visit to Vercaruz State,  hurricane and all. Please visit and enjoy, in this way you also help the economic recovery of the port, so battered by the hurricane.

Festejos del Bicentenatio /Bicentennial Festivity

Pues para el bicentenario este año surgió la posibilidad de ir a Xalapa en Veracruz, con mis amigos Efrén, Ale y Gonza. Aunque sabía que los festejos acá en el DfFserían espectaculares, la verdad es que soy un poco fóbico a las multitudes, así que mejor me decidí por Veracruz. Lo único malo fue que…  !Le atinamos al Huracán!

Pero el huracán nos hizo lo que el viento a Juárez así que nos la pasamos súper bien de cualquier manera.

Cómo tome haaartaas fotos, pues decidí dividir en dos la reseña de este paseo. Aquí les cuento de Xalapa, Coatepec y Xico. Tenía tiempo de querer visitar Xalapa y sus alrededores, pero no se había dado la oportunidad. Así que me cayó de perlas esta vez.

La ciudad de Xalapa (del  náhuatl “manantial en la arena” ) es la capital de estado de Veracruz, y siempre había escuchado que es muy verde y lluviosa. Está en la zona de montaña y a una altura de 1,460 msnm. Además es una ciudad “de estudiantes” que la llaman,  debido a sus universidades e institutos y a la que acuden a estudiar muchos jóvenes de todo el estado y sus alrededores. Xalapa fue habitada allá por el año 1313 y en 1521,  los totonacas que la habitaban recibieron a Hernán Cortés.

En Xalapa di “el grito” la noche del 15. Con unos amigos locales muy buena onda que me mostraron su ciudad. Fue muy colorido y lo único malo fue su nefasto gobernador. Un mono ‘X’ del PRI.  Al día siguiente anduve paseando por la ciudad y comprobé que efectivamente es muy verde y tiene muchos jardines.

Al día siguiente me alcanzaron mis amigos en  Xalapa y el viernes 17, el día que entró el huracán Karl al puerto de Veracruz, decidimos que eso no nos impediría seguir con nuestros planes y salimos hacia Coatepec y Xico.

Coatepec ( del náhuatl “En el cerro de la serpiente“) es el municipio vecino en la zona cafetalera, por lo que es famoso por sus haciendas y por la producción de café de altura. Veracruz es el segundo productor de café del país después del estado de Chiapas. Está catalogado como Pueblo mágico. El día que visitamos Coatepec  entró el huracán en Veracruz  y llovió y llovió y llovió todo el día. Pero nos compramos unos paraguas y valiéndonos lal lluvia nos paseamos lo que pudimos. En una callecita encontramos la cafetería y museo del señor Ruperto Pooch. Un viejito simpático que muy amablemente nos platicó sobre su historia, del pueblo y del café.

En las afueras de Coatepec visitamos la ex-hacienda de La Orduña. Del siglo XVIII. Fue primero una de las más grandes haciendas azucareras y después se convirtió en cafetalera. Actualmente es una escuela de Diseño: La Ceiba (www.laceibagrafica.com) . El Director muy amable nos hizo un recorrido por las instalaciones que son muy bonitas. El edificio es impresionante y en la entrada hay un árbol enorme, una ceiba, que la da el nombre a la escuela.

Xico está muy cerca de Coatepec. Es un pueblo más pequeño pero con encanto. Ahí comimos en un restaurante muy bonito y rico que se llama “La Casa Xiqueña”. Como no paraba de llover, ya medio cansados de andar por ahí con los paraguas, nos regresamos a Xalapa.  En la segunda parte de esta entrada, les contaré sobre el final de nuestro viaje a Veracruz.

For  the bicentennial festivity, I got the chance to go to Xalapa city in Veracruz state, with my friends Efrén, Gonza and Alex. Although I knew the celebrations here in Mexico city would be spectacular, the truth is that I am a bit phobic of crowds, so I decided it would be better to go to Veracruz. The only bad thing was that… ! a Hurricane Striked!

We didn’t know about the hurricane until we got there, but it didn’t stop us from have a great time.

I took a ton of  photos, so I decided to split the review in two. In this part  I will talk about  Xalapa, Coatepec and Xico. I had long wanted to visit Xalapa and its surroundings, but had not been given the opportunity. So I was lucky  this time.

The city of Xalapa (from the Nahuatl “spring in the sand”) is the capital of Veracruz State, and  I had always heard it’s very green and wet. It’s in the mountain area at an altitude of 1,460 meters above sea level. It is also called a “city  of students” , because their universities and institutes and because a lot of  young people come to study from all  around the state.

Xalapa was inhabited around the year 1313 and in 1521, when the Totonac people received Hernan Cortes the conquerer.

I spent the September the 15th Independence Festivity in Xalapa, with a group of very cool local friends that showed me their city.  The following day I walked around town and found that it is indeed very green and has many gardens.

Thursday my friends reached me in Xalapa and on Friday 17, the day Hurricane Karl hit the port of Veracruz, we decided that this wouldn’t t prevent us from continuing our plans and we went to Coatepec and Xico towns.

Coatepec (from the Nahuatl “On the hill of the snake”) is the neighboring town in the coffee zone, and it is famous for its farms and coffee production.Veracruz State is the second largest coffee producer in the country after the state of Chiapas State. The town has been classified as “mágico = magical” by the tourism council. The day we visited  Coatepec it rained and rained and rained all day. But we bought some umbrellas and under the rain we walked all we could. In a little street cafe we found the museum of Mr. Ruperto Pooch. A nice old man who very kindly talked about its history, people and coffee.

Nearby Coatepec we  visited the ex-hacienda of La Orduña. From the Eighteenth century. It was first one of the largest sugar plantations and later it became a coffee plamtation.Today is a school of Design: La Ceiba (www.laceibagrafica.com ). The Director gave us a very nice tour of the facilities. The building is impressive and at the entrance there is a huge tree, a ceiba, which gives its name to the school.

Xico town is very close to Coatepec. It is a smaller town but with it’s own charm. There we ate at a very nice restaurant  called “The House Xiqueña.”  Still with heavy raining, we were a bit  tired of walking around with umbrellas, so we went back to Xalapa. In the second part of this post, I’ll tell you about the final part of our trip to Veracruz.

Ex Hacienda en Coatepec

Moctezuma II

Se está presentando en el Museo del Templo mayor la exposición “Moctezuma II, Tiempo y Destino de un Gobernante”. Tratando de dar una mirada diferente a lo que siempre nos enseñan en la escuela. No la historia de que entregó su imperio y fue asesinado por su propia gente, sino la del hombre de su tiempo, que actuó movido por las circunstancias y que el final, fue capturado y asesinado por los españoles, como puede verse en la imagen de un códice donde se le ve atado del cuello por los conquistadores y después atravesado por una espada.

Y no solo es solamente porque sea mi antepasado. Bueno si, si es mucho por eso, jaja. Pero también lo es porque es momento de alejarnos de ideas simplistas y que repetimos como borregos y darnos cuenta que la historia tiene muchas más facetas de las que nos enseñan. Un emperador que era un guerrero triunfador, gobernante de uno de los imperios más grandes del hemisferio, en el esplendor de su civilización, entregando todo así, ¿tan fácilmente? Muy improbable.

En fin, acérquense a este museo que es de mid favoritos, donde además de entrar por las ruinas de lo que fue el impresionante templo mayor , se está presentando también el monolito descubierto hace un par de años, el de la Diosa de la Tierra Tlaltecuhtli. Es enorme, más grande que la piedra del sol. Y lo más maravilloso es que ha conservado muchos de sus colores originales ¡por quinientos años!

Diosa Tlaltecuhtli / Tlaltecuhtli Goddess

The Templo Mayor Museum is presenting the exhibition “Moctezuma II, Time and Fate of a Ruler.” Trying to give a different look to what we are always taught at school. Not the story that he gave away his empire and was killed by his own people, but the man of his time, acting out by the circumstances and that at end was captured and killed by the Spanish, as shown in the picture a codex (made by indians of his time) where he is shown tied by the neck by the conquerors and then pierced by a sword.

And it’s not only just because he’s my ancestor. Well, yes, that has a lot to do with it, haha. But also because it is time to move away from simplistic ideas and stop echoing like sheep what we were told and realize that history has many more facets that we realize. An emperor who was a triumphant warrior, ruler of one of the hemisphere’s largest empires in the splendor of its civilization, surrendering all so, so easily? Very unlikely.

In short, approach this museum which  is one of my  favorites, where you not  only walk  through the ruins of what was the impressive temple, but also you will have the chance to see  the monolith discovered a couple of years ago, the Earth Goddess Tlaltecuhtli . It is huge, bigger than the Aztec Calendar. And the most wonderful thing is that it has retained many of its original colors for five hundred years!

Museo del Chopo

Dieron la noticia de que reabrían el Museo del Chopo y nos lanzamos a visitarlo y ver que tanto le hicieron. Este edificio está construido con acero y es montable y desmontable. Lo construyeron en 1902 en Francia y un empresario mexicano lo compró y entre 1903 y 1905 lo montaron en México para ser una sala de exposición. Después fue sede del Museo de Historia Natural. Y después estuvo cerrado durante mucho tiempo y reabrió como un espacio cultural de la UNAM para volver a cerrarlo con el objetivo de esta última remodelación.

Como siempre en estos casos, la remodelación es polémica y a algunos les gusta y otros la odian. Yo estoy como en medio. No me gusta que se perdió la percepción del inmenso espacio del edificio pero me gustaron las áreas de exposición  y las salas de cine y que hay mucha luz. No nos dejaron tomar fotos dentro.

Cuando salimos del museo ya nos rugía la tripa y decidimos buscar donde comer así que comenzamos a caminar por el barrio donde se encuentra el Museo y que es Santa María la Ribera. Caminamos y caminamos y de pronto nos quedamos prendados por sus calles y las  casonas que íbamos encontrando. Casonas del siglo XIX cuando esta era una zona de riquillos. Hay  mucha casa de antiguo abolengo. Casas restauradas y coloridas y otras descuidadas y hasta abandonadas. Lo que más me llamó la atención es que es una colonia muy viva. Hay muchos comercios: Tienditas, tintorerías, cafés, restaurantes. Y hay mucho movimiento de gente local. En el parque principal donde está el famoso Kiosco Morisco había gente caminando y un grupo practicando danzas prehispánicas a ritmo de tambor. Ahí enfrente está también el impresionante edificio del Museo de Geología de la UNAM. Al fin comimos en La Casa de Toño. Famosa por su Pozole. A mi lo que me encantó fue el flan. Je Je.

Uno nunca termina de conocer esta inabarcable ciudad. Dense una vuelta y descubran como yo esta zona de la ciudad y además se echan un rico pozole.

I heard the news that about the  reopening of the Chopo Museum  and we headed  to visit the place and see how the remodeling turned out. This building is made  of steel and it can be  assembled and disassembled. It was built in 1902 in France and it was bought by a Mexican businessman and between 1903 and 1905 was  put together in Mexico City to be a showroom. Years later  it was home of the Museum of Natural History. After that it was closed for a long time  and later reopened as a cultural space of the UNAM  (National University) to close again with the aim of  an extensive  remodeling.

As always in these cases, the remodeling is controversial and some people like and some others hate it. I’m …like in the middle. I do not like to lose the perception of vastness of the building but I liked the new exhibition areas and the cinemas and there is plenty of light. It’s not allowed to take pictures inside.

When we left the museum we were starving and decided to look a place to eat so we started walking around the neighborhood: Santa Maria la Ribera. We walked and walked and suddenly we were captivated by its streets and houses. There are old Mansions of the nineteenth century when this was a rich guys neighborhood. There are many houses of ancient lineages. Many colorful restored houses and other neglected and even abandoned. What struck me most is that a colony is very much alive. There are many shops: grocery stores, dry cleaners, cafes, restaurants. And there is much movement of local people. In the main square you can see  the famous Moorish Kiosk and there was people walking around and a group of people practicing pre-Hispanic dances to the rhythm of drums. There is also the impressive building of the UNAM’s Museum of Geology.  At last we ate at La Casa de Toño. Famous for its Pozole. What I really loved was the flan. He He.

Feria de las Culturas Amigas

Hola,

El año pasado durante la crisis del virus N1H1, varios países nos dieron la espalda. Otros no. Se hizo este evento como agradecimiento a esa muestra de amistad de aquellos que no cerraron sus puertas. Sobre la avenida Reforma hay muestras de su gastronomía, cultura, artesanías, turismo. Aunque yo creo que no somos rencorosos porque vi algunos stands de algunos de los países que no se portaron muy bien con nosotros precisamente. Pero bueno, el espíritu es la amistad.

Dense una vuelta. Estará durante el mes de Mayo.

Palacio de Hierro de Orizaba / Iron Palace in Orizaba

Fui a Orizaba por un evento familiar. Todo mundo me había dicho que no había nada que ver, que era un pueblo ‘X’.  Así que fui sin ninguna expectativa.

Cuando vas a Veracruz la autopista pasa junto a Orizaba, por lo que recordaba las grandes montañas impresionantes y verdes y la casi permanente niebla en esa zona.

El día del evento me pude escapar en la mañana a caminar por ahí con cámara en mano. No tenía mucho tiempo. De la avenida principal del hotel tomé casi al azar una de las tantas callecitas para dirigirme hacia el centro.

Son callecitas estrechas y bulliciosas y lo primero que noté fueron muchas construcciones antiguas, como de la época porfirista, afrancesadas y elegantes. ¡Y de colores!  Y a continuación las iglesias. Una tras otra. Amarillas, azules, rojas y anaranjadas. Con esos colores que sólo en México pueden tener las iglesias. ¡Tantas iglesias en una ciudad tan pequeña!

Después me encontré jardines y pequeñas plazas. Todo muy verde y exuberante por ese clima húmedo y cálido que hace que todas las plantas crezcan y se desborden. Algo que impresiona es que las montañas dominan desde todas las calles. Casi puedes tocarlas. Verdes y enormes.

En el centro, en la plaza junto a la catedral, te topas con la sorpresa del edificio del Palacio de Hierro. Este era el antiguo palacio municipal de estilo francés y está hecho totalmente de piezas montables de hierro. Wow. Ahora es un museo y cafetería. ¡Es precioso!

Algo que no pude ver fue el Pico de Orizaba. El volcán más alto de México y que lleva el nombre de la ciudad y del valle. Un taxista me dio que aquella mañana se veía claramente y muy nevado, pero cuando salí del hotel ya la bruma lo cubría.

El último día ¡hasta pudimos ver un desfile! era por la feria regional.

Orizaba fue fundada en el siglo XVI por los españoles sobre un asentamiento indígena, y tuvo una gran importancia en la Colonia y al inicio de la época industrial en México.

Así que mi visión de Orizaba cambió radicalmente. Resultó tener mucho encanto. Ahora pienso volver y recorrer los sitios que vale la pena visitar en los alrededores y además están muy cerca Córdoba y Fortín de Las Flores.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I visited Orizaba for a family commitment. Everyone had told me there was nothing to see, that it was a kind of plain town. So I went without any expectations.

On the way to  Veracruz the  highway passes near Orizaba. I recalled the great green amazing mountains and the almost permanent fog in the area.

The morning of the event I  escaped  to walk around with camera in hand.  I Didn’t  have much time. From the Main Avenue I  took one of the many little  streets that  go to downtown.

These are narrow and bustling streets  and the first thing I noticed were the many old buildings, in an elegant French style from porfirista times. And so colorful! And then  the churches. One after another. Yellow ones, blue ones, red ones and orange ones. With those colors that only Churches in Mexico can have. So many churches in such a  small town!

There are  gardens and small squares. All very green and lush because of the warm and humid climate which makes all the plants grow and overflow. One thing that impresses me are the mountains dominating the streets. You can almost touch them. Green and huge.

In the square next to the cathedral, you’re faced with the surprise of the building of the Palacio de Hierro (Iron Palace). This was the old French-style Town Hall and it’s made entirely of mountable pieces of iron. Wow! Now it is a museum and a cafe. It’s beautiful!

Something that I couldn’t  see was the Pico de Orizaba (Orizaba’s Peek). The highest volcano in Mexico and named like the city and the valley. A taxi driver told me that earlier  that morning the volcano was clearly seen and it was very snowy, but when I left the hotel  it was very clouded and I missed it. But we could see a nice parade for the regional  fair instead!

Orizaba was founded in the sixteenth century by the Spaniards on an Indian settlement, and it was of great importance in the Colonial times and at the beginning of the industrial era in Mexico.

So my vision of Orizaba has changed radically. It turned out to be a very charming place. Now I’ll come back and visit all the places worth visiting in the neighborhood. The cities of Córdoba and Fortin de Las Flores are close too.

Bonita calle típica de Querétaro / Pretty street in Querétaro

Esta Semana Santa me fui a Querétaro.

Es una ciudad que me gusta mucho y a la que vuelvo siempre. Me gusta en especial el Centro Histórico, que fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1996. Es espectacular, bien conservado, súper limpio y lleno de edificios históricos, plazas y templos de colores espléndidos. Procuro siempre hospedarme en esa zona. Esta vez me costó un poco porque todo estaba lleno pero al final me quedé en esa zona. Es una delicia caminar por esas calles y me di vuelo con la cámara.

Hay mucha actividad en las calles del centro: Recorridos guiados a pie o en los tranvías. Históricos o de leyendas. Diurnos y Nocturnos. Performances, mimos, payasos, merolicos, músicos. Muchos restaurantes de todos los precios y riquísimos. Tiendas de artesanías. Un Tianguis. Imposible aburrirse.

El Jueves Santo me tocó ver la procesión del silencio. La verdad no me gustó mucho porque se me hace algo medio tétrico y todos esos encapuchados me recuerdan al kukuxklán. Es deveras impresionante el silencio y solo tocan en cadencia muy lenta unos tambores lúgubres.

Tuve la oportunidad de ver además a varios buenos amigos, así que la pasé súper.

Santiago de Querétaro es la capital del estado del mismo nombre. Pocas ciudades en México tienen tanta historia como Querétaro. Fue fundada en 1531 por el cacique Conín. El emperador Moctezuma la marca como el límite norte de su imperio. Durante la Colonia se le conoce como la tercera ciudad del reino, por su importancia estratégica y su riqueza. Ahí se inició el movimiento de Independencia. Fue durante un tiempo capital del país y ahí se promulgó la primera constitución. Ahí fue vencido el emperador extranjero Maximiliano y fue fusilado. ¿Qué tal?

Actualmente es una de las ciudades con más crecimiento del país y con uno de los más altos niveles de vida. Por eso está llena de chilangos escapados del DF, je, je.

Querétaro City is spectacular, very well preserved, very clean and packed with historic buildings, pretty plazas and temples. It’s colorful and splendid. I always try  to find a hotel in that area. This time was a bit difficult but a made it. It’s delightful to walk in those streets and I was taking pictures like crazy.

There is a lot of activity in the historic district. Guided tours walking or by trolley. Historic or Legend tours. Day and Night tours. Performances, mimes, clowns, street vendors, musicians. There are a lot of good restaurants with a wide range of prices and delicious. Many handcraft stores. There is a flea market. It’s impossible to get bored.

Easter thursday  I had the chance to watch the Procession of Silence. I didn’t like it much. I found it rather gloomy. All those hooded figures reminded me the Kukuxklan. The silence is really impressive and you can only hear some mournful drums.

Fortunately I had the chance to see some good friends so I had a great time.

Santiago de Queretaro is the capital of the state of the same name. Few cities in Mexico have as much history as Querétaro. It was founded in 1531 by  indian Chief Conín. The emperor Moctezuma marked it as the northern limit of his empire. During the colonial period it was known as the third city of the kingdom for its strategic importance and wealth. In Querétaro started the independence movement. It was for a time the capital of the nation and there the first constitution was promulgated. There the foreign imposed Emperor Maximilian was defeated and was shot.

Today is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and has one of the highest living standards. That’s why  it is  full of auto-exiled chilangos from Mexico City, heh, heh.

Escultura en Bellas Artes

Cada año en el Centro Histórico se lleva a cabo la Noche de Primavera. El sábado más cercano al equinoccio. Hay música, teatro, performances, todo en la calle. Así que nos lanzamos al centro y caminamos y caminamos y nada. No vimos ningún evento y no estaban cerradas las calles como habitualmente se hace en esta fecha. Preguntando a un policía nos confirmó que se canceló este año, que por el museo temporal. Pero nos dimos una vueltecita de todos modos. Lo bueno de centro es que siempre hay algo que ver y siempre hay sorpresas. Como las cabezas colosales en la explanada de Bellas Artes. Estaban padrísimas pero ni me enteré de quién eran porque no pusieron ningún letrerito por ahí.

Every year takes place the Spring Night of the Historic Downtown. The closest saturday to the equinox. There is  music, theater, performances. All that happens in the street. So we went to downtown and we walked and walked and nothing. There was no event anywhere. I asked a policeman and he told me the event was cancelled this year. But we hanged around anyway. There is alway something to see in the historic downtown. Like the colossal heads on the Fine Arts Palace Square. They were cool but there was no reference to the author. So, thanks to the unknown talent.

Hermoso Día

Qué días hermosos hemos tenido en Chilangolandia ¿eh? Cielos azules azules y limpísimos. Un domingo de esos corrí con mi cámara al mirador de la Torre Latinoamericana para aprovechar la vista fantástica desde allá arriba. Lo malo es que lo mismo se le ocurrió a mucha otra gente y tuve que hacer una fila como de una hora para subir al mirador.

Pero valió la pena. ¡Qué vista! Como pocos días podemos disfrutar en la Ciudad de México. Dominando el valle, los volcanes. Majestuosos. El Popocatépetl (La montaña que humea en Náhuatl, el lenguaje de los Mexicas) y el Iztaccíhuatl (La Mujer Dormida). Y la ciudad empequeñecida a sus faldas. A la vista todas las bellezas y miserias de esta mi Ciudad.

Seguro hace años, antes del smog y contingencias ambientales, este era el paisaje cotidiano. ‘La Región Más Transparente del Aire’, como le llamó Carlos Fuentes en su famosa novela. Así que me llené los ojos lo más que pude de esa visión y pos tomé unas cuantas fotos.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________What beautiful days we’ve enjoyed in Mexico City! Blue and limpid skies. One of those sundays I took my camera and ran to the Latin American Tower view point. The bad thing about it was that many other people had the same idea and I had to stand up on a line for an hour.

But it was worth it. What a view! Something seldom seen in Mexico City. Dominating the Valley, the two volcanoes. The Popocatepetl (Smokey mountain in nahuatl, the Aztec language) and the Iztaccihuatl (the dormant woman). And the city, small at their feet. In plain view all the wonders and miseries of my City.

I’m sure some years ago, before pollution and  environmental contingencies, this was the ordinary landscape. “The Air’s most transparent region” , as the Writer Carlos Fuentes called it in his famous novel. So I filled my eyes with the incredible view and took some good pictures.

I love you Chilangolandia! (nick name for Mexico City)

Dallas, Texas

Este fin de año decidimos hacer algo diferente y Enrique, Toño y yo nos fuimos al norte.

En Monterrey pasamos un par de días y nos paseamos por la ciudad, fuimos a algunos muy buenos antros y por supuesto fuimos al Paseo Santa Lucía y al Parque Fundidora. Cada vez que voy a Monterrey lo encuentro más bonito. Me di tiempo también para en una escapadita visitar a la familia.

Después fuimos a San Antonio, Texas. Es una ciudad que me gustó mucho. Es muy padre e impresionante su River Walk, el río artificial rodeado de tiendas, hoteles y restaurantes, que es de donde se tomó la idea del Paseo Santa Lucía en Monterrey. Es muy curioso que  no necesitas hablar inglés para nada. Es como estar en una ciudad mexicana: Se habla español en todos lados, hay mariachis en el River Walk, todos los centros comerciales están repletos de mexicanos y ves autos procedentes de México en toda la ciudad, los nombres de las calles y barrios son en español. Se nota cuando Texas era México, pues. Fuimos por supuesto a los Outlets famosos en San Marcos para las compras, pero yo nomás hice ‘Window shopping’ porque no andaba de presupuesto para eso.

El año nuevo lo pasamos en Dallas. Dallas es una ciudad muy grande  y muy gringa llena de freeways y enormes Malls. La noche de año nuevo fuimos a cenar y de ahí esperamos el año nuevo afuera del American Airlines Center muertos de frío pero divertidos.

San Antonio nos gustó mucho más y los mejores antros fueron los de Monterrey.  Fue un fin de año diferente y divertido.

This New Year holiday we decided to do something different, Enrique, Toño and I. We headed to the north.

We spent a couple of days in Monterrey and we toured around. We went to some very nice bars and of course we went to the Paseo Santa Lucía, Monterrey’s River Walk and Parque Fundidora. Every time I go to Monterrey I find it prettier. I also made some time to visit my family.

Later we went to San Antonio, Texas. I liked a lot this city. The River Walk is very impressive, their artificial river with lots of stores, restaurants and hotels along it. Monterrey took the idea for Santa Lucía from them. San Antonio is like being in a mexican city, You don’t need to speak spanish at all. You find Mariachis in the River Walk, all the store sand malls are crowded with mexicans and all the streets are named in spanish. You can tell when Texas was part of Mexico. We visited the famous shoppimng malls but I just made ‘Window Shopping’ because it was just out of my budget, he.

We spent New Year’s Eve in Dallas. Dallas is a very big city and very gringo style. It’s full of freeways and big malls. We had dinner at an Italian restaurant and the we went to the American Airlines Center where the New Year’s party took place. We were freezing but it was fun.

I liked much better San Antonio and bars were much better in Monterrey. It was something different and fun.

Iglesia Principal de Tonatico

Tonatico es un pueblito en el Estado de México, muy cercano a Ixtapan de la Sal. De hecho, ahí pegadito. La iglesia y la placita son bonitas. Muy cerca de allí hay un parque con unas cascadas. Camino al parque hay sembradíos y muchas flores. El parque es pequeño pero bien cuidado. Hay una pequeña cascada que puedes ver desde un puente colgante. De ahí fuimos a las Grutas de la Estrella, que están como a 20 minutos. Soy muy bonitas e interesantes y el lugar está cuidado y los recorridos bien organizados.Cenamos en Ixtapan de la Sal. Su iglesia y su plaza son bonitos también.De hecho es más bonito que Tonatico. Ese día había una celebración religiosa y sacaron la imagen de la Virgen en procesión acompañados de una banda. Es lo padre de los pueblos.

Tonatico is a little town in the State of Mexico, very close to another town, Ixtapan de la Sal. Tonatico’s church and main square are very nice. Close to downtown is a small park with a waterfall. We walked to the park and the road was very pleasant with flowers and fields. The park is well mantained. You can watch the waterfall from a suspension bridge.

From there we went to the Star Caves. Beautiful and interesting. They have guided walks and they’re very well organized. Late that night we had dinner at Ixtapan. Ixtapan main square and church are also very nice. In fact Ixtapan nicer that Tonatico, je. Thay day there was a religiuos celebration taking place. They took the virgin image in procession through the town with a local band playimg along. It’s what I like about towns.

!Me encanta la Navidad!

Estoy un poco atrasado ya casi terminando la temporada, pero aquí les muestro como se vive esta época en el DF. Por primera vez el gobierno del DF instaló un arbolote de navidad en pleno reforma. El árbol de navidad más grande del mundo. Fuimos el día que lo encendieron y fue espectacular. En las fotos les muestro algunos aspectos de la navidad en la ciudad, una posada y algunas de mi casa.

Ups. A bit late for showing you the aspects of the season in Mexico City. For the first time, local government installed a huge christmas tree in Reforma avenue. The tallest christmas tree in the world. We were there  in the lightning ceremony. Awesome! It was spectacular. I posted some pics showing aspects of this season in Mexico City. A ‘Posada’ and some pics of my home.

Alebrijes en Reforma

Hola,

Una de mis artesanías favoritas son los Alebrijes. Esos animales fantásticos como de sueño, pesadilla o fantasía. Me encantan sus colores y los seres tan bizarros que representan. Hay hechos de Cartón o de madera (estos son los de Oaxaca).

Ya tiene unos años que inició una tradición en el DF, que es la de realizar un desfile de Alebrijes gigantes del Zócalo al Angel en las fechas del Día de Muertos. Después del desfile dejan por algunas semanas las obras sobre Paseo de la Reforma y así los disfrutamos todos.

One of my favorite typicall handcrafts are the Alebrijes. The Alebrijes are fantastical creatures that seem to come from a dream or a nightmare. They’re very colorful and bizarre. They can be made of cardboard or wood.

It’s been a couple of years now that anAlebrijes parade has been held in Mexico City’s downtown. These Alebrijes are giant. After the parade the fantastic creatures are displayed over Reforma avenue for a couple of weeks.

Día de Muertos en Coyoacán

Pues siguiendo con la celebración del Día de Muertos, al día siguiente de ir a Tultepec, nos dimos una vueltecita por Coyoacán, que siempre es bonito en estas fechas. Hay mucha gente vestida de calacas y Catrinas. En la fuente principal se pone una mega ofrenda.

Como cada año en el  Museo de Culturas Populares ahí mismo, hay una excelente exposición de ofrendas de varias partes del país y se vende mucha artesanía y pan de muerto y dulces. Es una muy buena opción para visitar en estas fechas.

Continuing with the Day of The Dead activities, the following day after visiting Tultepec, we went to Coyoacán. An old town absorved by the city and now a n¡eighborhood. It’s always pretty in this festivity. Lots of people and amany of them dressed like skeletons and Catrinas. A mega offering is placed at the square’s main fountain.

Like evefry year, the Popular Culture Museum displays an exposition of offering from various parts of the country. There is a lot of handcraft and traditional candies and dead’s bread.

A very nice option worth the visit.

Una vez más llegó mi festividad favorita. El Día de Muertos. Arriba pueden ver a una Catrina cantando ‘Llorona’ (en voz de Eugenia León, como solo ella puede hacerlo), un fragmento del cortometraje ‘Hasta los Huesos’ un ejemplo de como vemos la muerte los mexicanos.

Este año fui al pueblo de Tultepec, en el Estado de México, el 31 de Octubre. Tultepec es conocido nacionalmente por su producción pirotécnica. Se dicen los mejores del país. Yo creo que si lo son. Si no solo vean el video que tomé donde se ve una muestra de su trabajo. Tultepec es un pueblo más bien feo, pero lo bonito que tiene es que han conservado muchas tradiciones. Una de ellas el Día de Muertos. Ese día las familias hacen pequeños faroles, de diferentes colores y formas e iluminados con velas. Todos se reúnen y hacen una procesión hasta el zócalo del pueblo. En el centro del pueblo se muestran varias ofrendas y venden atole, champurrado y pan de muerto, otra rica tradición local. Al finalizar la procesión, el evento se cierra con,  no podía ser de otra manera, una demostración de pirotecnia. Así se mezclan de nuevo la muerte y la fiesta.

Once again my favourite festivity. The day of the Dead. Above you can watch a ‘Catrina’ (A fancy skeleton) singing in the beautiful voice of Eugenia León,  ’Llorona’ (The Wheeper’), a fragment of the shortfilm ‘Down to the Bone’, an example of how we mexicans look at Death.

This year I visited Tultepec town. On October 31st. Tultepec is nationwide known for its fireworks production. They pride themselves as  the best of the country. I agree with them. You can watch a piece of their work in the video I filmed. Tultepec is a rather ugly little town, but they keep many traditions and that makes it nobler. One of those traditions is the Day of the Dead. On that day the families  make this little lanterns in several colors and shapes illuminated by candles. Everybody gather and make a procession toward the town center. There you can find several Ofrendas (offerings)  and hot and corn made beverages are sold, like Atole and Champurrado. And of course Dead’s Bread, another local tradition. When the procession ends, the event is closed with a fireworks exhibition. It couldn’t be other way in Tultepec.  In that way Death and Fiesta are again reunited.

Vista desde el Mirador

Pues nos fuimos de paseo al campo. Fuimos a casa de mi amigo Kike, en las cercanías del volcán Popocatépetl.

El día era espléndido y en el camino al popo pasábamos campos y campos soleados y llenos de flores. Nos detuvimos en un mirador para echarnos las rigurosas quecas.
Desde ahí se tenía una vista de un valle que parecía el protector de pantalla de Windows, je je.

Visitamos Nepantla, el pueblito donde nació Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Hay un museo muy bonito justo en el lugar que ocupaba la casa donde nació.

También visitamos Tenango del Aire, otro pueblito típico donde hay un museo muy curioso, el Museo de Madera, donde tienen una colección de antigüedades y te dan un pequeño tour muy entretenido.

Lo que más disfruté de este paseo fueron los cielos azules y los campos verdes de la zona de los volcanes. Dense una vueltecita. está tan cerca. Saliendo por Xochimilco y Milpa Alta.

We went to the countryside, to the house my friend Kike has in that area, near the Popocatépetl volcano.

The day was splendid and on the road to the house we passed green fields after green fields full of flowers. Beautiful. We stopped for a while to have a snack and from there , we had stunning  view of the valley. It looked like the windows classic wallpaper, he he.

We visited Nepantla, the town where the XVIIth century nun, poet and intellectual, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was born. There is a very nice museum just where  the house she was born into was located.

We also visited Tenango del Aire, another little town. There is another curious museum, The Wood Museum. They have an antiquities collection and you can have a fun guided tour.

But what I enjoyed the most were the blue skies and the green hills in the volcano area. Visit!

Real del Monte

Hace unos días  visité el estado de Hidalgo con mis amigos. Mi familia es de ahí, por cierto. El estado tiene varios climas en diferentes regiones. Esta vez visitamos la zona de montaña. A esta parte le llaman el Corredor Turístico de Montaña.

Estuvimos en el Parque Nacional El Chico, muy cerca de la capital, Pachuca. Mientras vas subiendo a la montaña, hay vistas muy bonitas y un mirador. El mirador está del nabo pero la vista si está muy padre.

Adelantito empieza el bosque y todo es muy bonito. Verde, verde y más verde. Paramos primero por unas quecas y después seguimos hasta  la presa El Cedral. Es un lugar muy agradable y con vistas preciosas. De ahí seguimos al pueblo El Chico, que efectivamente, está bien chico. Como dos calles. Jajaja. Pero dos calles muy bonitas. La iglesia es muy bonita también y desproporcionadamente grande para el tamaño del pueblo.

De ahí nos fuimos a Real del Monte, que está muy cerca. Real del Monte (también se le conoce como Mineral del Monte) es un pueblo precioso conocido por sus minas de plata, que primero se explotaron en el virreinato y después por los ingleses en el siglo XIX. Los ingleses trajeron el fútbol y los pastes (derivado de la palabra inglesa ‘pasties’, un tipo de empanada). Casualmente coincidimos con la feria del Paste y pues le entramos alegremente. Hacía un frío del cocol y la niebla cubría de pronto el pueblo, pero como me gusta el frío, pues perfecto. Todos los edificios del centro son muy bonitos y están perfectamente mantenidos y conservados. Vale mucho la pena caminarlo bien tapado y con paste en mano.

A few days ago I visited with my friends the Hidalgo State. My family origins are from that state. Hidalgo has a variety of climates and regions. This time we went to the mountains region. This is called the Mountain Touristic Corridor.

We visited the El Chico National Park, very close to the state’s capital, Pachuca. While driving up, you can find very nice views and a tourist viewpoint (not very well maintained).

Minutes from there you find the forest. Everything green! We stopped for a snack (Quecas) and then hit to El Cedral Dam. Very nice place and has very nice views. Then we drove to El Chico town (Meaning ‘The small town”). And it’s truly small. About 2 streets!, he, he. The church is uncommonly big for such a small town, but it’s very pretty.

Later we arrived to Real Del Monte town. Very close to El Chico. Real Del Monte is a beautiful little town known for its silver mines, first operated in colonial times and later in the XIXth century by the British. British workers brought to Mexico the soccer game and ‘Pastes’ (like a small pie, the word derived from ‘Pasties’). The Paste Fair was being held and we ate cheerfully. It was very cold and the fog covered the town at times. But I love cold!  The town buildings are really pretty, colorful and very well maintained. It’s worth a nice walk, well wrapped and with a Paste in hand.
