Morelia y el Paricutín, Michoacán

En mayo pasado visité Morelia. Para mi es una ciudad muy especial y querida por muchas razones.

Morelia es una de las ciudades coloniales más bonitas y mejor cuidadas del país. Es del  tipo que uno disfruta muchísimo el caminarla. El centro histórico es enorme y cada calle tiene una sorpresa. Sorprende que es muy limpio y tranquilo.

Algo de lo que más disfruto es de la iluminación nocturna. ¡Es espectacular!  Es algo que no se pueden perder.

Morelia está llena de lugares que visitar: Templos, plazas, jardines, museos , mercados. Hay un par de recorridos en un tranvía, de día y de noche. Por supuesto que abundan los lugares donde comer riquísmo. Desde muy económicos hasta muy exclusivos. La cocina local es famosa y deliciosa.

También hay  mucha vida cultural y se llevan a cabo cada año festivales internacionales de Música y de Cine.

Algunos datos: Fue fundada en 1541 y es la capital del Estado de Michoacán.  Su centro histórico  fue declarado patrimonio cultural de la humanidad por la UNESCO.

También fuimos a dar una vuelta cerca del Paricutín, el volcán más joven del mundo. Hizo erupción en 1943  y arrasó con dos pueblos: Paricutín y San Juan Viejo Parangaricutiro (Parhikutini yParangarikutirhu en purépecha). Pero nadie murió porque hubo mucho tiempo para evacuar.

Es un paseo padrísimo. Llegas a un pueblito y de ahí alquilas caballos. Puedes ir hasta el volcán o  a los restos del pueblo cubierto por la lava. Nosotros visitamos el pueblo. Lo único visible es la parte superior de la iglesia y se mantiene erguida una torre. Impresionante. ¡Es un lugar súper interesante de visitar!

Last May I visited Morelia City. For me it’s a very special and dear city for many reasons.

Morelia is one of the finest colonial cities in Mexico. It’s the kind of place that  you enjoy at best walking. The historic district is enormous and every street brings a surprise. It’s  surprisingly quite and clean.

One of the aspects I enjoy the most is the night lighting. It’s just spectacular. Something you cannot miss. There are many places to visit: Temples, squares, gardens, museums, markets. There is also a trolly with night and day tours .

Of course there are plenty of eating places, from economic choices to exclusive restaurants. The local food is delicious and famed.

There is a lot of cultural life in Morelia and every year are held there the International Music Festival and the International Film Festival.

Some facts: Morelia was founded back in 1541 and today is the capital of Michoacán State. It has a historic downtown so beautiful and clean and with a fantastic lighting at night. It was also declared world historic heritage site for the UNESCO.

We also visited the Paricutín, the youngest volcano in the world. It erupted in 1943, destroying two villages: Paricutín and San Juan Viejo Parangaricutiro (Parhikutini and Parangarikutirhu in purépecha language).

There were no casualties because there was plenty of time to evacuate. We visited the latter town, which is covered with lava and the only visible spot is the old church. The upper part and a tower. Wow. It’s a fascinating place to visit!

Malinalco, Estado de México

Panorámica de Malinalco

Hace unas semanas visitamos nuevamente Malinalco, en el Estado de México. Es un pueblo muy bonito que existe desde los tiempos prehispánicos. Enla cima del cerro de los ídolos hay un templo azteca tallado en la montaña  ( el Cuauhcalli  o casa de las águilas) que era un lugar sagrado donde se ordenaban los caballeros Águila y Jaguar de las milicias aztecas.

Malinalco viene del náhuatl Malinalxoch, de malinalli y xochitl (flor), y significa ‘la flor de Malinalli‘.

También hay un convento colonial hermoso  del siglo XVI y con unos frescos en las paredes que son increíbles.

Está como a una hora y media del DF rumbo a Chalma.

Se los recomiendo.

We visited a few weks ago Malinalco town. Malinalco means ‘The Malinalli flower’, A very pretty place that has existed since precolumbian times.

There is a very important temple carved on the mountain wall ( Cuauhcalli or ‘House of the Eagles’) on the top of a hill (idols hill) where the Eagle knights and Jaguar knights from the Aztec army were ordered.

There is also a beautiful colonial  convent  from the XVIth Century with wonderful frescoes.

Festival Internacional del Globo de León / International Leon Balloon Festival

En el Parque Metropolitano

Tenía un par de años deseando ir al festival del globo desde que supe de su existencia. Y éste año se me hizo.  Se lleva a cabo a mediados de noviembre. Durante 4 días. Así que nos lanzamos el fin de semana.  Sabía que sería algo diferente, pero superó mis expectativas.

Llegamos a León, Guanajuato (1,137,000 habitantes),  y nos dimos una vueltecita por el centro. León fue fundada en 1576, para defender el centro del país de los ataques de los indios chichimecas. Otra de las maravillas del estado de Guanajuato, junto con San Miguel de Allende y la ciudad capital. El centro histórico es muy bonito y vale la pena recorrerlo.

León es conocida como EL centro de producción de zapatos y artículos de piel del país y pos aproveché y me hice de unos zapatitos y una chamarra muy baratos, jeje.

El festival se lleva a cabo en el Parque Metropolitano de la ciudad y una parte del evento se realiza en la noche. Es el inflado de globos que en la noche se ve de veras espectacular. Parecen esferas navideñas gigantes iluminadas. Woooow. Además hay un rodeo nocturno y por supuesto lugares donde se come  rico (nos comimos unas tortas de 10).

El evento principal es muy temprano (¡a las 6:00 AM!) en el mismo lugar. Así que con un frío del nabo y desvelados  pero con mucho entusiasmo, nosotros y otras miles de personas estuvimos esperando a que llegaran los más de cien globos de varios países que participaron.  En cuanto llegaban comenzaban de inmediato a inflarlos. Para ser tan grandes lo hacen rapidísimo. En 20 minutos ya estaba inflado un globo por completo.

Lo más padre son los colores y las formas de los globos.  Y verlos por cientos elevarse al amanecer de veras es impresionante. También lo hace muy padre el hecho de que el evento sea junto a una presa, por lo que los globos se elevan y se reflejan en el espejo de agua.  Es una emoción muy especial. Es como ser niño de nuevo.

¡Nos divertimos como enanos!. Se los recomiendo.

I’d been wishing for the last two years to go to the Leon International Ballon Festival since I heard about it. Finally this year I could made it. It’s held every november for 4 days. So we hit the road that weekend. I knew it was going to be something diferent, but it was beyond my expectations.

We arrived to Leon (pop 1,137,000), in Guanajuato state and we had a walk around downtown. Leon was founded
back in 1576, as a defense post against the atacks of the chichimeca indians. It is another of the marvels fo Guanajuato state, along with San Miguel de Allende and the capital city. The historical downtown is very pretty and is worth the visit.

Leon is known as THE shoe and leather production center of the country and well, I got a pair of very comfy shoes and a nice leather jacket.

The festival takes place at the Metropolitan Park and part of the event starts at night. While the balloons were being inflated, they looked like giant christmas decorations.  Awesome! There is also a night rodeo and lots of good places to dine. We had some really tasty tortas (kind of mexican sandwich).

The main event started the following day at 6am! We got there very early still sleepy and freeeezing but very exited. Along with thousends of leoneses we waited for the more than 100 balloons from different countries to arrive. As soon as they came they started inflating the balloons. For being such big artifacts, the process is amazingly fast. Just 20 minutes or so.

What I liked the most were the striking colors and original shapes. Watching them slowly elevate at sunrise was impressive. It’s also very cool the fact that the event takes place next to a dam. So the ballons were reflected in the water. A very special emotion. Like being a kid again.

We had fun galore!. I recommend you visit next year.

San Miguel de Allende

¡Hola tod@s!

Ahora nos fuimos de paseo a uno de mis lugares favoritos: San Miguel de Allende.
Yo creo que es el pueblo más bonito de México.

Apenas en Julio fue declarado Patrimonio  Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Si un lugar lo amerita, es San Miguel.

Es un pueblito colonial súper mexicano y súper típico. Y aún así es un lugar cosmopolita, lleno de muy buenos restaurantes, galerías y tiendas de artesanías que te dejan boquiabierto. En las noches hay muy buen ambiente de lo más animado y te sobran lugares para una buena cena o algún bar para pasarla bien. Tiene mucho que ver la gran cantidad de gringos que viven ahí.

San Miguel tiene el tamaño perfecto para caminarlo. Es una delicia. Y por supuesto, no podía faltar el color, color, y más color en todo. Sus calles, casas, templos, cielo. Todo.

Si quieren pasar un fin de semana genial, ¡visítenlo!

My friends and I went to one of my favorite places: SanMiguel de Allende. I believe this is the prettiest town in Mexico.

Only last  July it was declared a world heritage by the UNESCO. If a place deserves it, it’s San Miguel.

San Miguel is a little colonial town and super typical. And yet it’s a very cosmopolitan place, with lots of good restaurants, art galleries and awesome handcaft shops. In the evenings there is a very nice ambiance and there are plenty of nice places to have a great dinner or good bars to go to. I guess it has to do with the great gringo population of San Miguel.

San Miguel has the perfect size to walk it. It’s delicious. And of course, the omnipresent color, color, color. In its streets, houses, temples, sky, everywhere!

If you want to have a great weekend, visit San Miguel!

Oaxaca

Templo de Santo Domingo

Tenía muchas ganas de conocer Oaxaca desde hace mucho tiempo. Siempre me había llamado la atención su fuerte culura indígena y sus tradiciones y fiestas. Esta marzo al fin pude conocerle. No me decepcionó. El centro de Oaxaca es magnífico, y como todo en México, ¡Qué colores!

Por supuesto visitamos el magnífico Templo de Santo Domingo, que ahora también es un centro cultural. Ahí pude  apreciar los tesoros encontrados en la famosa tumba siete de Monte Albán , un jardín botánico, la biblioteca y muchas cosas más.

Las  dos principales culturas prehispánicas de Oaxaca fueron la Zapoteca y la Mixteca. Por supuesto estuvimos en Monte Albán. Majestuoso en su emplazamiento que domina el Valle de Oaxaca, fundada  allá por el año 500 AC y capital Zapoteca. Y en Mitla, la ciudad más importante de los Mixtecos.

También visitamos Hierve el Agua, un nacimiento de agua en la una cima y en medio de un terreno aridísimo y que ha creado “cascadas” petrificadas.

Visitamos asimismo  una fábrica de tapetes, que y tiene unas cosas increíbles.

El Mezcal es, después del Tequila, una de las bebidas tradicionales más típicas del país. Visitamos una destilería y fue muy interesante.

No faltó en la visita ir a conocer el famoso árbol del Tule, el más ancho del mundo y con una edad calculada de ¡2000 años!

Solo es una muestra de lo mucho que hay que ver en ese estado, así que me esperan muchas visitas más.

I was wishing for a long time to visit Oaxaca. I’ve always felt attracted to its Indian culture and its festivities and traditions. Finally last march I could make that wish come true. I wasn’t disappointed at all. Oaxaca city downtown is magnificent, and like in all of Mexico, what colors!

Of course we visited the magnificent temple Santo Domingo, which is now a cultural center also. I could see there the treasure found in the king’s tomb in Monte Albán.

The two main prehispanic cultures in Oaxaca were the Zapoteca and the Mixteca. Of course we visited Monte Albán,  the majestic remains of the Zapotec capital, founded in 500 BC.  And Mitla also, the main city of the Mixtecs.

We also visited Hierve el Agua (Boiling Water), a spring at the top of a mountain which mineral water petrified seems like stone waterfalls.

We went to a typical rug workshop seen beautiful things.

Mezcal, is the second most known typical beverage in the country after Tequila. We visited a distillery and it was very interesting.

We went also to see the Tule Tree, the widest in the world and with an approximate age of 2000 years!

And still there is so much more to see that I will have to pay many more visits to Oaxaca. I hope.

Guanajuato

Panorámica de Guanajuato

Estas son las fotos de el paseo a Guanajuato que realicé el 1º de Noviembre del 2007. En día de Muertos. Guanajuato es una de mis ciudades favoritas. Es hermosa y deslumbrante. Uno no se cansa de caminarla.

Guanajuato nace en el siglo XVI con el descubrimiento de yacimientos de plata y a partir de entonces comenzó la bonanza minera alcanzando la mayor prosperidad en el siglo XVIII.

Ahora es una ciudad eminentemente turística y realmente vale la pena visitarla. Una de las ciudades más bonitas del país. Hay que llevarse unos buenos zapatos porque esta ciudad se disfruta caminando.

Hello All!

I made this trip to Guanajuato City on November 2007.

One of the most beautiful cities in the country, it’s one of my favorites too. I never get tired of visiting and walking it.

Born in the XVI century due to the discovery of rich silver mines, it was a prosper city during colonial times.

Now it’s an eminent touristic city and so worth to visit. You have to bring a good pair of shoes, since the best way to enjoy it is walking its beautiful, narrow and romantic streets.

Tlaxcala

Tlaxcala es un pequeño estado muy cercano al DF, pero con mucho que ver. Me di una escapada rápida con mis amigos y recorrimos vario sitios. Visitamos el sitio arqueológico de Xochitécatl, centro ceremonial de los años 600-800 después de cristo.  También visitamos el otro sitio arqueológico importantísimo por sus murales preservados: Cacaxtla y por supuesto la capital, Tlaxcala.  Pero habrá que volver porque con una historia prehispanica y colonial relevante, hay mucho más que ver.

Mural de Cacaxtla

Tlaxcala is a little state in central Mexico near Mexico City. My friends and I made a quick trip to the capital and enjoyed it a lot. Besides the colonial city we visited the arqueological sites Xochitécatl (place of flowers) founded in 600 a.c. and Cacaxtla, very important site due to the preserved murals.  We’ll have to come back because with its prehispanic and colonial history,  there are many things to see.

Puebla

Puebla, estado con unos 5 millones de habitantes, fue fundada en 1531 y durante la época colonial fue la segunda ciudad más importante del país. Tiene un centro histórico hermoso lleno de magníficos edificios coloniales que rivaliza con el de la Ciudad de México.

En puebla hay muchos pueblos muy bonitos con templos precioso y recorrimos varios de ellos. También visitamos la famosa hacienda de San Antonio Chautla, tan bonita que han filmado películas y telenovelas.

Pero lo mejor de Puebla es mi numerosa familia, jeje. ¡Besos y abrazos a todos!

Catedral de Puebla

The State of Puebla has 5 million inhabitants and was founded back in 1531 and in the colonial times became the second city in importance in New Spain. It has a magnificent historical downtown rivaling with the Mexico City’s.

There are lots of pretty towns in Puebla with many beautiful temples and we visited some of them. We also visited the famous ex-hacienda San Antonio Chautla, where several movies and soap-operas have been filmed.

But what I like the most of Puebla, is my large family there! hugs and kisses to everyone!
